I swam with Joe and graduated in 1998 from Loyola with him and the 4 other senior swimmers. The meet they are referencing in the article really was something amazing. Joe literally willed himself to win in that race, he came from behind in one of the most amazing races I've ever seen in person. During the race his body got redder and redder the more he exerted himself. He would not allow himself to lose, his will was too strong, his desire was too great. He came from behind in the last 50 free of a 200IM, and Mike Wheeler was no slouch. Keith, our coach, later said to me that he knew that Joey would not allow himself to lose.

I swam morning and evening practices one lane away, or in the same lane as Joe for 4 years and was on NBAC for 6 years. Joe was the personification of every attribute I strived to achive in the pool and in life. He was a charismatic leader, well liked by all, respected by all, he had an amazing work ethic and a true passion for life. If there was one guy I want to be like it was Joe Curreri.

The sentiments related by Brian Whipple on this website and by Brad Shertle in the Baltimore Sun article very accurately state how I felt about Joe. I simple cannot believe he's gone. He was so much larger than life, so tough, I didn't think anything could hurt him, ever. He is truely missed.
